For Mentors

How a mentor supports this role

Your mentor helps you build the judgment, confidence, accountability and leadership skills needed to make those decisions yourself.

Where a mentor helps

  • Help him understand undergraduate responsibilities versus AVC and property ownership authority.
  • Coach professional communication, issue resolution and handling housing-related conflict.
  • Provide guidance on housing policies, occupancy and lease-related responsibilities.
  • Emphasize documentation, prioritization, inspections and proactive maintenance practices.
  • Coach escalating appropriately and ensuring issues are resolved.

Mentor coaching focus

Accountability & Ownership
Identify issues, assign follow-up and ensure problems are resolved.
Communication & Conflict Management
Communicate professionally while navigating resident, vendor and AVC concerns.
Judgment & Problem-Solving
Prioritize issues, recognize when to escalate and address problems early.

Ask your mentor

  • “How do I get brothers to take shared responsibility for the house?”
  • “How do I handle a vendor or property issue professionally?”
  • “What should I document, and how?”
  • “When do I escalate to the AVC rather than handle it myself?”

Development ideas

  • Build an inspection checklist and schedule with your mentor's input.
  • Draft clear house expectations and how they will be enforced.
  • Create a simple maintenance log so issues never get lost.
